19 February 2008

Canberra racewalker Nathan Deakes will this weekend compete in Australia for the first time since winning the 50km world championship in 2007.

He will also compete with a much needed new sponsor on his back.

Deakes was unceremoniously dumped by his shoe and apparel sponsor two weeks after winning the world title.

Last year after the European racing season, he was forced to sell his car to finance flights for he and wife Antoinette to come home. But Deakes’ story did pick him up a fan in Canberra, and McDonald’s ACT licensee Garry Moffitt tracked him down to help out with the four-time Commonwealth gold medallist’s travelling costs and the 20 pairs of shoes he goes through each year.

“It just came as an incredible surprise to me…,” Moffitt said. “And I just though, here is someone who is the ultimate ambassador for Australia and he hasn’t even got a sponsor, so I decided to do something about it.”

This weekend Deakes will contest the Australian Open 20km Road Walking championships in Melbourne.

And while he’d like to think there will be a few people there to welcome his racing return to Australia, he is equally excited to just compete again after his last race well over two months ago.

“I’m just really looking forward to it myself and hopefully a lot of other people are.” Deakes said.

“It’s obviously great for the sport: in the past the coverage we have had may have been negative, although I suppose any publicity is good publicity, but to actually have someone doing well is great for our sport. So hopefully people will come out on the weekend, and support myself and the rest of the walkers trying to qualify for the Olympic games.”

Deakes will race against fellow AIS athletes Jared Tallent, Adam Rutter and Luke Adams this weekend, who have all qualified for the 50km event in Beijing and said despite not racing for a few months, he was ready to tackle the 20km distance again.

“Training is going well, I’m feeling fit and I even surprised myself when I did my first speed workout in a while last week. So it’s all coming together.”

After this weekend Deakes will race in Mexico next month, before heading off to Arizona for five weeks of altitude training. After that it’s back to Canberra for six weeks, then Europe, before finally in August, reaching Beijing.
